MIDDLE SCHOOL

Thriving to serve and lead by knowing God and understanding His world…

MCA Middle School: 5th & 6th-8th Grades

Middle school students build on their biblical knowledge and worldview training while focusing on Bible study techniques in later grades. The 5th grade serves as a transitional year with departmentalized instruction in a self-contained classroom, preparing students for the challenges of lockers and changing classes. Our ELA curriculum is science-of-reading-based, while mathematics prepares students for Pre-algebra and Algebra I by 7th and 8th grades. Science includes a strong STEM focus, culminating in hands-on dissections, while social studies integrate skills learned in ELA to reinforce comprehension and critical thinking.

The study of the Bible is foundational to our curriculum.
Students study and memorize scripture to develop
strong character qualities and a biblical worldview.

Grades 5-8 apply biblical knowledge and worldview training by examining current issues using the Walking in Truth curriculum from Summit Ministries. Students in grades 7 and 8 end the year in rigorous Bible study techniques using Romans, 1st and 2nd Corinthians, and the epistles of Paul as their text.

Reading, writing, listening, and speaking
are modeled, taught, and assessed.

Grades 5-8 use Wit & Wisdom as the basis for comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. These are taught intentionally using quality literature, teacher modeling, small group discussions, Socratic Seminar, and group presentations.

Mathematics instruction integrates direct teacher instruction
and guided and independent practice.

Grades 5-8 use Big Ideas Math and McGraw Hill Algebra 1 as their main instructive and practice resources. Emphasis is given to understanding both the computational procedures and the reasoning concepts of math to harness efficiency, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Our middle school math program is a compacted pathway of foundations in grades 5 and 6, pre-algebra in grade 7, and algebra 1 for all students in grade 8!

Science instruction encourages students to study God's world in Physical, Life, and Earth Sciences.

In grades 5-8, students develop habits of inquiry, investigation, hypothesis, experimentation, and recording results. In 5th grade, a Christian science curriculum (BJU Press) supports our teachers in implementing a robust biblical worldview. Consistent biblical integration and worldview training are applied to 6th- 8th grade instruction while implementing the Glencoe Interactive Science curriculum.

Students study God's people in Geography, Civics,
Economics, Culture, and American and World History.

In grades 5-8, students learn facts and engage in lively discussions surrounding social, moral, and ethical issues. Teachers implement various social studies curricula (Glencoe, Pathways, WIt & Wisdom) for a robust ELA-integrated history and social studies study.
